Do not beoffended when asked all kinds of questions to determine if you would be a good prospective Vizsla owner.   If you talk to a breeder and DO NOT get asked a bunch of questions, then that Vizsla might be more than for which you bargained.

When contacted, I appreciate if that person shares with me something about themselves and why they think that a Vizsla is a good match for them.  This is a good starting point in a dialogue.  It saves some time because this is what I will ask you when getting back to you before proceeding further.  It also allows me to forward any info to another breeder with whom I may be connecting you.

Typically, a good quality puppy comes with a contract from the breeder.  This is to offer protection for both parties.  A good contract should not be something to fear.  If you have questions about the contract, be sure and ask them.  It is important to have everything be very clear before picking up your puppy. The relationship between a breeder and their puppy home is extremely important.  Your breeder can be your greatest source of help and information as you raise it.  To track the welfare and health of what they are producing, a good breeder will want to keep in close contact with you.  This is their only means to insure that we will continue to produce puppies of excellent health and temperament.

Puppies will generally be sold as a "pet only" or "show home prospect".  All pet puppies should be sold on a "limited registration" basis.  This means that they can be registered with the AKC, but that none of their issue can be, unless your breeder "lifts" this ban by mutual agreement.  Generally speaking, these pups are encouraged to be spayed or neutered.

Puppies going out on a full registration will typically be sold with a "co-ownership".  This offers a protection to the breeder that their pup will not be indiscriminately bred or perhaps have their dogs and their bloodlines end up in puppy mills.  Your breeder will share more information with you if this is the case.  Each breeder has a contract that is custom tailored, and it is vital to know what will be expected from you if you should take home a "show prospect".  Never agree to show just to get a pup and then change your mind.  It is better for all concerned to wait for the right puppy.  This will spare both parties much strife down the road.

Expect to pay 1200-1400 dollars for a top quality Vizsla.  Also expect that you will more than likely be placed on a waiting list.  If you are in a hurry for a dog, then pick another breed that is more available.  You might get lucky but waiting gives you time to both know your breeder better and to learn more about the breed.

Breeders love to get pictures of their "kids" after leaving home.   After all, many of us have rocked them in our arms and babied them when their tummies were upset.  We get quite attached to the puppies during the 8 weeks we spend with them.  It is sometimes hard for people to understand what makes a show breeder tick.  Our puppies represent a commitment that reflects many years of dedication to our breed with many joys and much heartbreak.  We are not just selling you a puppy, but a piece of our heart and soul.

There are lots of breeders out there.   Ask the right questions to find a “good breeder.”   When adding a dog to your family, there should be no doubts about the breeder from whom you buy.  You are not just buying a puppy, but if you are smart, you are buying a good breeder too.   The end result will be worth it.   From the breeder’ standpoint, it is hard to lose touch with our kids and the families to whom they belong.   Be kind to your breeder.   Let them hear from you.
